Iran bans women from watching Euro 2012 TV events

TEHRAN: Women in Iran have being banned from watching live public screenings of Euro 2012 because of an ‘inappropriate’ environment where men could become rowdy, said a deputy police commander.
“It is inappropriate for men and women to watch football in theatres together,” said Bahman Kargar. “Men get excited and sometimes utter vulgar curses or tell dirty jokes. Women should thank the police for the ban.”
Many among Iran’s hard-line authorities and clerics favour segregation of the sexes and find the mingling of unrelated men and women to be corrupting.
