  1. Twitter abuzz with #gates after Mehar Bukhari, Mubashir Luqman fiasco

Islamabad: Bahriagate, Mediagate, Anchorgate, Familygate, Malikgate, Arsalangate and now Mehrgate and Luqmangate. Twitter has been abuzz with these terms since the launch of a video uploaded on YouTube, showing (or exposing) Mehar Bukhari and Mubashir Luqman.

Whole Tweetosphere is flooded with tweets regarding the video and almost all tweeters vented their anger against the two anchors.

It may be first time in the history of Twitter that seven of the top ten trendings belonged to Pakistan and only one topic was being discussed—the media.

Below are some from a sea of tweets which show how Twitter sees these ‘gates’.

#MediaGate is perhaps the best thing for Pakistani media. Swaying public perceptions out of inaccurate and speculative facts is a crime

  2. Islamabad: Pakistan is abuzz with news items regarding Malik Riaz, who according to some journalists is a de facto ruler of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Mubashir Lucman, a former federal minister during Musharraf regime and an anchor of private television channel Dunya News, alongside Meher Bokhari conducted an interview with the property tycoon.

Here is an un-edited interview of Malik Riaz, which would definitely make you think in which system are you living in.

  3. SC takes notice of “off the air” talk with Dunya News anchors

Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has sought video footage of Malik Riaz’s interview aired on Dunyia News on Wednesday.

The SC has also ordered Pakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority (PEMRA) to provide the video record of the interview.

It is to mention here that Dunya News anchors Meher Bokhari and Mubahsir Lucman had conducted a planted interview of the real estate tycoon Malik Riaz, providing him with the opportunity to threw mud on Chief Justive of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

Both the anchors were taking instructions during the break as which questions were to ask.

  5. An orchestrated campaign was launched against Dunya TV by nefarious elements.

Talking to Dunya News, senior politicians and journalists revealed that certain insignificant media groups in league with nefarious elements launched a well-thought out conspiracy against Dunya News and its workers to thwart media-group’s swift progress.

Dunya newspaper is in the offing and its popularity has threatened the vested interests.

Thousands of Dunya News workers have vowed to valiantly defeat this conspiracy.

Rana Azeem - the president of Punjab Union of Journalists - said that those involved in such anti-media propaganda would not succeed in their cause.

"Dunya News achieved exemplary success in short span of time" he added.

PPP s deputy parliamentary leader in the Punjab Assembly Shukar Basra said Dunya News raised its voice against the dictators and always kept public interest in view.

PML-Q leader Chaudhry Zaheeruddin vowed to support Dunya News and asked its administration to continue serving the masses through unbiased reporting.

He also said that the matter should be taken to the court and those involved in the conspiracy should be brought to justice.

PML-N leader Ayaz Amir said leaked off-air footage of the program is being used by various media groups as a tool to fuel anti-Dunya News sentiments.

Inamullah Niazi, member of PTI said that leakage of the footage was a violation of privacy law.

  8. Islamabad: Mubashir Luqman will host show on Dunya TV today and “answer to all accusations” levelled against him after a video leak, showing off-the-air remarks of a Malik Riaz interview with him and Mehar Bukhari.

Luqman tweeted on Monday that “I am sure a lot people will be shocked who had spread rumors that I had run away to UK to avoid an inquiry. Well I am here.”

He cursed all those people who kept on using abusive language against him on social media and told them to “please go off my time line or I will block you”.

He advised all gossipmongers to “read Quran and see what it says about those who spread rumors”.

When one of his fans told him that he was shocked to see the leaked video and asked Luqman if he was guilty over the episode, the anchor replied: “If I was guilty why would I be back? Why would I not run away? And guilty of what man? Have a heart and wait for the show.”

He said that a lot of people abused him and his family over the past three days and said he felt sorry about that.

He claimed that the video leak was a conspiracy against Dunya TV, as the channel is now dominating its competitors.

  9. Nasim Zehar withdraws her resignation, staying with Dunya News

Nasim Zehar, a prominent anchor person and Director Dunya News Current Affairs, has taken back her resignations on Tuesday after the TV management asked her to assist framing code of conduct for anchorpersons.

Zehra has tendered her resignation to Dunya News management after a scandal of Anchorgate appeared through leaked video in which her fellow anchors—Mehar Bukhari and Mubashir Luqman- were apparently involved in the planted interview of Malik Riaz, a real estate magnet.

In her tweet message, she said, “Dunya News has asked me to stay on help set up a Code of Conduct for Anchors, which is a general consensus after interview/video saga was Code is a Must. After thinking over the proposal, I realized that it provides me an opportunity to address an issue we are all concerned about so I have taken back my resignation.”

In the aftermath of anchorgate scandal, the image and respect of media and journalists have been hurt badly and many questions have been raised on the impartiality, responsibility and role of the media in the political and social scenario of the country.

She thinks that the leaked video generated questions in the mind of viewers as if anchors are playing in the hands of Malik Riaz.

She believes that an anchor plays a vital role in making public opinion. It is an important and sacred position because their views reflected on the thinking of people.

Nasim Zehra is the person who did not take bold decision but she also saved the dignity of the media, which has been observed under harsh criticism for its irresponsible role and corruption due to particularly class of anchors.

Though she took back her resignation for an important cause but her gesture proved to be a significant move against yellow journalism and black sheep of media industry.

Nasim Zehra: An intellectual, a columnist, a professor

Nasim Zehra is an anchor and a columnist and contributed actively in making public opinion. Her writing career was impressive and quite long in the field of journalism and expert but later she joined a mainstream media for a leading role.

She is a fellow of Harvard University Asia Center, Cambridge, Mass. and Adjunct professor at SAIS Johns Hopkins University, Washington DC.

Zehar became Pakistan’s Special Envoy on UN Reforms, representing the country on many international visits. She was also conferred Sitara-e-Imtiaz for her valuable services to nation and country.

She has been working as Director Current Affairs of Pakistan’s News TV Channel Dunya TV. She also hosts Current Affairs program on Dunya TV with the name of “POLICY MATTERS”.
